Overview

This half day course provides an introduction to safety engineering and safety management within the context of AS 61508 in its various incarnations including NZS 61508 and IEC 61508.

Intended Audience

This course is suitable for those wishing:

• to gain a basic understanding of the scope and application of AS 61508;
• to formalise or to improve processes for safety management and safety engineering processes and show compliance with AS 61508;
• to ensure a common basis of understanding of AS 61508 for systems, hardware and software teams; or
• to understand some of the implications of applying AS 61508.

Content

The course "Applying AS 61508" covers the safety life cycle and requirements presented in Part 1 of AS 61508. It particularly focusses on Phases 4 and 5 of AS 61508 which cover the definition and allocation of safety requirements and the generation of Safety Integrity Levels (SIL). Although it addresses Parts 2 and 3 (realisation of hardware and software respectively) of AS 61508, it does not cover these in detail; the course "Software Development using AS 61508" has been developed for clients requiring more specific training in the latter.
